Cases AttendedA root canal is a dental procedure used to treat infection or damage within the pulp (inner tissue) of a tooth. It helps save the natural tooth by removing infected tissue, cleaning the area, and sealing it to prevent further infection.
Contrary to popular belief, modern root canal treatments are not painful. Local anesthesia is used to numb the area, so most patients report that the procedure feels similar to getting a regular filling.
Common signs include persistent toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling or tenderness around the gums, and discoloration of the tooth. A dentist can confirm the need for a root canal with an exam and X-rays.
The dentist removes the infected or damaged pulp, cleans and disinfects the root canals, then fills and seals them. A crown is often placed afterward to restore the tooth’s strength and appearance.
Most patients return to normal activities the next day. You may experience mild discomfort or sensitivity for a few days, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Good oral hygiene and follow-up care are important for long-term success.
